Republicans in Congress drew a bead on great carnivores of the West on Thursday, with the House passing legislation to block reintroduction of grizzly bears to the Cascades, and strip Endangered Species protection from gray wolves.
The government would be prohibited from using federal dollars to transport grizzlies to the North Cascades Ecosystem, under an amendment introduced by U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., to the U.S. Department of Interior appropriations bill.
U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, in a surprise, held a news conference in Sedro-Woolley earlier this year, and endorsed reintroduction of “ursus horribilis” to the North Cascades.
