ANCHORAGE –

A Juneau woman cited for hindering legal trapping in Juneau last month freed a bald eagle caught in a trap — but the bird had to be put down due to its injuries, according to an official at a raptor facility in the state capital.

The Juneau Empire reported Sunday that Kathleen Adair, 39, was cited for the misdemeanor offense on Jan. 10, after Alaska Wildlife Troopers investigated a trapper’s Dec. 30 complaint that someone had set off his traps at Davies Creek, near the end of the Juneau road beyond Auke Bay.

Scot Tiernan, the treasurer of the Juneau Raptor Center and a veteran of 20 years of rehabilitation work on birds, said he got a call from Adair on the afternoon of Christmas Eve.

“She brought in an eagle she had released from a leg-hold trap,” Tiernan said. “There were several traps out at the end of the road.”

In Adair’s citation for the Dec. 24 offense, Alaska Wildlife Trooper Jake Abbott alleged that she had triggered a number of traps in the area. He didn’t mention the freed eagle.
