The lives of countless bear and wolf families are hanging in the balance today because the U.S. House of Representatives just voted to overturn a ban on cruel hunting tactics that previously protected animals on some of the most treasured wildlife refuges in America.

On 76 million acres of federal refuges in Alaska, hunters will be permitted to enter dens where vulnerable bear families are hibernating and kill them if the resolution becomes law. They will also be able to shoot entire wolf families raising young pups if the Senate and President agree with the vote.

“What the House did today should shock the conscience of every animal lover in America,” Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), said on Thursday. “If the Senate and President concur, we’ll see wolf families killed in their dens, bears chased down by planes or suffering for hours in barbaric steel-jawed traps or snares.”

The overturning of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) ban would also allow hunters to lure animals with food and shoot them at point-blank range.

Even people in favor of hunting applauded the ban when it was issued. “Inhumane hunting methods have caused the overkilling of native Alaskan predators; this rule takes a balanced approach allowing for traditional, permit-based hunting,” then-Representative Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) said last year after the cruel practices were banned.

Now it’s unclear why the push to overturn the ban was introduced in the first place, as a 2016 poll of Alaska voters showed that most agreed that those practices should be banned. Alaska’s Representative Don Young (R-AK), who has trapped animals in the past, introduced the measure, known as H.J. Resolution 69, anyway.

Congress voted 225 to 193 in favor of it on Thursday, some citing states’ rights as the reason for their vote in favor, despite the resolution being about federal lands.

  26. Please, I ask all lawmakers to repeal this law. Wolves are beautiful and social creatures. They are living, breathing beings just like us… and they have an equal right to be here. Wolves are our friends, and they mean us no harm. Please don’t let others hurt them.

My name is Josh Buker, a devoted Advocate for wolves and bears and all other wildlife and once again I just want to ask, Why hunt down and kill innocent little animals such as would pups, bear cubs or any animal old or young especially if they’re NOT harming anyone or anything ? Better yet, why even bother killing them for sport or at all period ? Please, to Whomever it may concern, PLEASE take a good look at this letter and all letters from myself and ALL Other wildlife Advocates and then reconsider these Evil, Needless killings of our Wildlife.       The True Monsters are definitely those that reintroduced this to get it overturned. If They continue they clearly need to be replaced on their next election. I wish it were faster and easier… but as long as we allow monsters to get elected, this is the outcome that we will continue to fight against.

You are not any more important in the world than “wild” species and we are the only animals that hunt for ” sport”. Cull humans, at least show compassion and empathy. A real man does not take life. For all the land they have and you want to take it away from them and then kill them too, that’s pretty cruel and callus, humans are the ones who have the most harm to them, not the other way around, They have no where to go, but you are making it impossible for them to live where they are.   65. I will never understand how people can go around hunting innocent animals for “fun” it is inhumane and needs to be STOPPED. Animals are living things, they are not something to kill “for sport”. It is ridiculous, leave the poor innocent animals alone, they deserve respect and this needs to be STOPPED NOW. If we get rid of bears and wolves then our prey population will become over populated and the carrying capacity for these species will be over reached. Getting rid of predators is the worst thing humanity could do!!! These people who want to put this in action need to educate the self and stay away from biases opinions.
