baiting and hounding of wolves in Wisconsin

Great Lakes States democratic Senators Klobuchar and Baldwin, are both facing 2018 elections, looks like they are going after Rancher/Hunter Votes…  joined republican Senators Barrasso and Enzi from Wyoming as cosponsors on the Senate’s bill to kick wolves off of the endangered species list. If it and its companion bill in the House pass, Wyoming, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin wolves will lose Endangered Species Act protections and these states will decide how to manage wolves.

This will mean a swift start of trophy hunting and trapping in some states and even unsportsmanlike baiting and hounding of wolves in Wisconsin.

Not just one, but two federal courts have already said that these states’ wolf plans are so bad… that wolves in those states need to stay protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The War on Wolves

The War on Wolves Act isn’t just bad news for your wolves, it’s worse news for the Endangered Species Act. The last thing that nature needs is a bunch of crooked greedy politicians picking and choosing which species get protected and which ones are left behind. As you all know, Congress and science don’t always go together, especially when it comes to our natural world, and the influence placed on these so called honest Elected officials by Big Money AG.

So back to the question: why this unrelenting war on wolves?

Ranchers would have you believe that ranchers and wolves can’t coexist…. and yes there are individual ranchers, as well as big money  ranching groups that oppose wolves. However the real truth is that only a fraction of one percent of cattle are killed by wolves. Things like other Packs, weather and disease are the true dangers. We have personally spoke with Ranchers  who follow best practices for ranching in wolf country, they have very few real conflicts with wolves.

So what is it that is really going on here?

To begin with, all state fish and wildlife agencies have historically received the bulk of their funding from hunting and fishing license sales, as well as ammunition tax revenue. Hunters have an outsize influence on the agency decision making (so much so that, in many parts of the country, these agencies are called fish and game—and not wildlife). Although some hunters don’t want anyone but humans killing deer and elk, so they have the highest chance…  Or they are nothing more than ruthless trophy hunters who want to kill wolves. In any event, agencies tend to be protective of their budgets, which translates into a desire to maximize both ungulate populations, which no doesnt make sense simply because they have boasted about Record Slaughters for the last 7 years.

Additionally in many states, the agriculture lobby is a more powerful political force, sneaking by somehow as nonprofits leading the fish and wildlife agencies to decisions that often only protect livestock interests—even at the slaughter of our wildlife.

Lets make one thing very clear, wolves aren’t just  one cog in the circle of life.  They are seen as a symbol since wolves were reintroduced by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service back into Yellowstone National Park. After of course the Government approved of their total slaughter back in the early 1900’s. Which sad to say included the introduction of Mange…. wolves a managed by FWS in other regions.

An intelligent individual recognizes their mythology including the fact that Wolves are not only smart, family-oriented, and communicative. Their personalities are clear. To name a few there was Romeo—the wolf who loved the dogs of Juneau Alaska, and visited them every fall for five years. Then there was ‘06, the beloved Yellowstone badass who went without a mate for much longer than scientists anticipated, because it turns out, and Donny Martorello would disagree with this proof that she didn’t need a pack to bring down an elk….. She did it all by herself, even just days after giving birth to pups. There is Journey, which just so happens to be connected to one of the Wolves that we are going to relocate from Idaho, unknowingly made history while thousands “watched” when his adventures that took him to California and then back to Oregon where he is now settled down and has a family.

Why is it that humans treat wolves differently than all other species?? It isn’t from science, It’s from the mythology—the stories that some tell themselves. As children, most read books like Little Red Riding Hood. Sadly some haven’t let go of their childhood fears. Some Humans continue to tell themselves this same story as adults: the wolf is our enemy, our killer…
