After watching Our Boys analyze their own fence.

This image came from our NE Washington Volunteer Huckleberry picker from the Smackout Meadows. Please note: this fladery did not even appear until long after the first depredation even with WDFW claiming it was present before the depredation even as it appeared in their updates. How Do We know this? Our Volunteer was in the area every other day. Needless to say, the fladery was nowhere to be seen until long after the first Depredation.

On to the room for improvement. After watching Our Boys, We have come up with 3 things that if changed, will most likely improve effectiveness overall of a fladery installation.

1. WDFW installed fladery to close to a barbwire fence. (Look at the second ribbon from the left) what happens when an electric fence touches a grounded object? It stops working! This We know from our own observations of using Electric fence. Solution: Install farther away from grounded objects including Fences, trees, grass etc.

2. It is to consistent not only in spacing but in length. Watching Our Boys, they appear to be more concerned with things that are not a consistent pattern and length. Solution: Add different lengths, change up spacing.

3. This fladery is all 1 single color. Again, our Boys were more wary of colors mixed up, different widths, different lengths etc. We have learned that they are much more cautious, borderline  scared of different lengths and color, giving the inconsistent lengths and colors a far larger distance as well as perceived respect. Solution: Add different Colors.

4. Make certain its actually truly installed before a depredation 😉

  2. I totally agree with your assessment. Wolves are pretty smart. I think they shouldn’t have a pattern. It should be dispersed more randomly but still close enough together. I think this will cause more confusion for the wolves. Thanks for asking.
