Michael and Sharon Sandlofer hope to dispel common myths about wolves — and entertain people in the process — when they bring their live Wolves of the World Show to the Ohio State Fair.

“The big thing here is we want people to understand that we share the planet Earth with all forms of life and it’s our responsibility to care for the animals and their families,” Mr. Sandlofer said. “God created the wolf and it does a special job.”

The Sandlofers will bring nine wolves — seven adults and two 8-week-old pups — to the show, to be held at 1, 3 and 7 p.m. daily throughout the duration of the fair, July 29 through Aug. 9, at the Ohio Expo Center & State Fair, 717 E. 17th Ave.

“They’re going to be doing natural behaviors,” Mrs. Sandlofer said. “You’re going to see them jumping, climbing, interacting with each other. There’s a little comedy woven in.”

They will be sectioned off from the crowd, she said.

Mr. Sandlofer said the animals in their show all are eastern timber wolves. The males weigh about 100 pounds and the females about 90.

The wolf certainly is a strong, natural predator — whose bite is about twice the strength of a pit bull — but it’s generally skittish around humans, Mr. Sandlofer said.

“They’re just not the big, bad wolves they’re portrayed to be,” he said. “They’re very shy animals.

“They don’t care about us human beings. They’re just concerned about their family.”

General admission prices to the 162nd annual Ohio State Fair are $10 for those 13 to 59 years old; $8 for children 5 to 12 and those 60 and older; and children 5 and younger will be admitted free. Parking is $5.

Tickets can purchased in advance for $6 at area Kroger stores, participating AAA locations and participating Ticketmaster retail outlets.

In addition to the traditional rides, agricultural exhibits and live entertainment, the fair has several new attractions this year, spokeswoman Alicia Shoults said.

The fair will hold a tattoo competition at 5 p.m. Aug. 3 at the ShowPlace Pavilion. Registration begins at noon.
