Culling wolf populations with aerial shooting in the “Lolo Zone” of the Clearwater is causing more debate in Idaho.
Friends of the Clearwater and other groups are critical of the Idaho Fish & Game Department for shooting the wolves from helicopters the past four years, claiming as many as 50 wolves have been destroyed in the state’s efforts to protect elk.
Idaho officials confirmed recently that they had killed 20 wolves during the most recent management operation. They point to a drastic decline in elk population from 16,000 to fewer than 1,000. An additional 20-wolves have been killed or trapped by hunters this season.
But during the rally in Boise on Monday, protesters showed their opposition, saying there was no public notice of the shooting operations and questioning additional money being requested for more wolf control later this year.
