Gov. Kate Brown Signs HB 4040 Thanks to Support calls from Oregon Sportsmen and Ranchers.

On March 15, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed House Bill 4040, which removed the gray wolf from the state’s endangered species list. Because the legislature approved the bill as an emergency measure, it takes effect immediately.

HB 4040 codifies into state law the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission’s 4-2 November vote in favor of removing gray wolves from the state endangered species list. It also limits the ability of extreme animal-rights groups to sue the state over the Commission’s decision.

“Animal rights and anti-hunting activists have increasingly turned to lawsuit to further their radical agenda,” said Evan Heusinkveld, interim president and CEO of the Sportsmen’s Alliance. “As is the case in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, these groups will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to try and keep an already recovered species under ESA protection.”

According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the state’s wolf population increased by 36 percent in 2015. The delisting of gray wolves will have no effect on current wolf management strategies in Oregon in the near future.

“We are pleased that Governor Brown upheld the scientific decision of the professionals at the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Commission,” said Heusinkveld. “These decisions should be made by trained wildlife biologists, not through the emotional rhetoric and fear of irrational extremists.”

Wolves in western and central Oregon will remain under the protection of the federal Endangered Species Act. Wolves in the eastern part of the state were federally delisted in 2011.

A Blurb About the Sportsmen’s Alliance somehow have brainwashed themselves into thinking they are conservationists:The Sportsmen’s Alliance is a 501 (c) 4 organization that protects and defends America’s wildlife conservation programs and the pursuits – hunting, fishing and trapping – that generate the money to pay for them. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 organization that supports the same mission through public education, legal defense and research.  Its mission is accomplished through several distinct programs coordinated to provide the most complete defense capability possible.
