JACKSON COUNTY, Ore. — The Jackson County Board of Commissioners agreed to move forward in creating a new committee on wolves. It’s not just a committee to protect wolves, but ranchers and their livestock too.

This means there is potential money coming from the state for the farmers and ranchers that can prove they have lost cattle to wolves.

Years ago, a similar committee failed to launch.

Commissioner Doug Breidenthal said, “(it’s) because we weren’t quite ready. OR-7 had just moved in, our world famous wolf,  and now that he has a mate and pups, and we have some more wolves in the area that we’ve been able to notice – we see this as a step of getting ahead of it instead of behind it.”

They will be keeping the committee well-rounded by having advocates for the ranchers, the wolves, and a Jackson County Commissioner involved.
