Contact FWP DirectorMartha Williams. (406) 444-3186 and tell her your not happy about removing the Yellowstone Bison Hunt closing!! Lets ring her phones off the desk! Tell her to put Our Proposed “Sacred Resource Protection Zone” on The Agenda as well. FWP was handed over 400,000 signatures in support when they received our Petition for Regulation change.

There are not enough Bison left to allow even Tribes to have this needless slaughter. Last Year we were asked to support the Young Tribal Groups Protecting them inside the Park, but then they wanted our approval to slaughter them at the Park boundaries , needless to say we out the error in their ways . There is nothing Sacred about slaughtering a humanized Buffalo at Yellow Rocks Borders.

The Beattie Gulch bison hunting closure proposed north of Yellowstone National Park near Gardiner has been removed from the Fish and Wildlife Commission’s Oct. 17 meeting agenda.

“We don’t want to rush into this decision simply because the bison hunting season is almost upon us,” said Martha Williams, FWP director. “The best way forward is to work harder on these issues and do our best to ensure a safe hunt for all who participate.”

The proposal was meant to address hunter safety by closing a small portion of the Beattie Gulch area to state bison hunters. That area is a narrow spot where the bison are vulnerable to hunters as they cross from Yellowstone, where they can’t be hunted, into the Custer Gallatin National Forest during winter forays for food.

Hunters have been known to line up at the site, waiting for the bison to exit. Some neighbors living across the road have complained about the firing line. Although the proposal would have affected only state hunters, six tribes bring many more hunters.

As of 2015, the most recent data available on FWP’s website, 10,424 people had applied for Montana’s 72 either-sex bison licenses. In 2015, state hunters killed 29 bison. Last year, the hunts north and west of Yellowstone in Montana killed 349 bison.

Another 660 bison were shipped to slaughter as a way to lower the park’s bison population as part of an agreement between the National Park Service and state of Montana.

With the hunt-area closure off the table for now, the Beattie Gulch area will remain open to all hunters who drew a permit. Fish, Wildlife & Parks staff will communicate with state hunters about the need for awareness and safety related to hunting bison in the area.

FWP will also continue to coordinate with treaty tribes who hunt in the area, including working with the tribes who have signed a memorandum of understanding addressing safety measures for tribal hunters.

  2. Bison are an iconic American species. We should be protecting them not slaughtering. There are barely enough in Yellowstone to keepthe gene pool healthy. They need careful management.

  3. I just can not beleive what we have to do to try and stop, save our wildlife From slaughter While its like a simple switch to allow, it. When is Man going to realize without them, we are no longer,
