Senators from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming recently introduced a new bill to Congress that would subject wolves to unregulated killing across each state, including Michigan. This is the “War on Wolves Act” H.R 424 a companion bill to other legislation recently introduced—called the Gray Wolf State Management Act of 2017—that would strip federal protections from wolves and allow trophy hunting and trapping in each of the states. The ESA requires the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to base all listing and delisting decisions on the best available science. Thus, when determining whether to end endangered species protection, federal law requires that an independent panel of scientists provide an objective scientific review of the federal agency’s proposals. The War on Wolves Act blatantly ignores this federal mandate and stands to weaken the ESA itself. It also prohibits any judicial review of the reissued rules, thus removing the citizens of their right to further challenge these rules in court.
We cannot allow a number of bills and riders to prioritize politics over science, to undermine and dismantle the Endangered Species Act. Our ability to protect imperiled species in the U.S. and across the world. The bills provide a handout to polar bear trophy hunters, open up millions of acres of federal public lands to painful steel-jawed leghold traps, and strip ESA protections from wolves in the Great Lakes and Wyoming and captive foreign species in the U.S. like elephants, tigers, lions, leopards, rhinos, and chimpanzees. I trust Raul Grijalva, and most of all Jared Huffman, to act however they can to unwaveringly protect wolves.
Republicans Bishop, Don Young, Cheney, Gosar, Pierce, McClintock (who operates out of the area where the only wolves in California live) are just some of the most famous antiwolf people in Congress, and they are going to allow riders and antiwolf/wildlife/public lands bills to go into the House NO MATTER WHAT THEIR CONSTITUENTS SAY.
There are many Dems in the House, who will kill wolves, as well. The worst come from MO, ND, LA. The ones I know by name are not on the committee, but we should ALL remember that Obama killed wolves at the beginning of his first term, and supported wolf-hater John Tester of MT.
Wolf and Wildlands defenders cannot blindly support any candidate , but must actively promote pro conservation candidates BEFORE they are elected, as to most urban-centered people, wolves and wildlife make no difference.
I write periodically to my congressperson, often repeating that this issue is the one upon which I vote. Far too many people just presume (falsely) that progressives care about the real, natural world. They do NOT. (barring grijalva, who represents native americans like his Tohono O’odham, who have always lived on both sides of the artificial borderlines
Yet, open borders and continuing the heavy immigration policies in place since the 1960s, WILL kill the safe large wild places that ALL large wildlife NEED to survive.
Every four and 1/2 DAYS there is another MILLION humans on the earth. We are crushing life out with this excess population explosion, and what is needed is members of Congress who will stand against Bishop’s destroying public lands, and most in both parties, who believe that hurricanes (I’ve been through the eyes of a couple) and war on the other side of earth are more important that the innocent natural lives of THIS continent.
What is wrong with you people that you are trying to kill our beautiful amazing WOLVES they have done nothing to you people but try to survive and take care of their family and pack but NO you want MONEY the DAM RANCHERS have all the rights and our wolves and animals have none it’s time to STOP KILLING OUR BEAUTIFUL AMAZING WOLVES AND OTHER ANIMALS BEFORE THEY ARE ALL GONE AND NOTHING BUT A MEMORY OR A PICTURE. OUR KIDS WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT OUR AMAZING ANIMALS ARE BECAUSE YOU SELFISH BASTARDS THINK ABOUT NOTHING BUT MONEY AND TROPHIES AND NOTHING MORE. STOP KILLING OUR BEAUTIFUL WOLVES AND OTHER ANIMALS.
