Wisconsin wolves at risk of over-harvest

Wisconsin demonstrating humanity at its finest!! Humans again prove beyond a shadow of a Doubt that they are a more bloodthirsty 2 legged wolf, than the 4 legged wolf.

Wisconsin wolf management needs revision because there are major concerns.

Wolves represent the smallest population of any animal harvested. And it cannot be said harvesting males from monogamous animals (wolves) does not have much impact on the population as can be said of polygamous animals (deer).

Hunters and trappers are successfully harvesting wolves. Some say that means we have many more wolves than are counted. But it could also mean wolves are very vulnerable to harvest.

Department of Natural Resources staff describe the season as a “horse race” with “urgency” and “resolve” to get a wolf quickly. High numbers of traps are being set.

The harvest system — trapping, hunting, use of dogs — is very liberal. Quota areas close very quickly, indicating its effectiveness.

All three wolf seasons exceeded set quotas. Three zones went beyond their separate kill limits, one by nearly double.

In 2013, only Zone 3 had a very low harvest rate, but once dogs were permitted harvest occurred very quickly. Without any training season, hound hunters obviously knew how to harvest wolves with dogs.

Dogs training on wolves was illegal before July 2014. However, the ungovernable running of limitless dog packs on wolves year-round with free rein is harassment and invites poaching. Wolves are killed illegally every year.
