Oregon’s wolves continue the expansion of their range with two sets of tracks confirmed on Monday, Dec. 15, by Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists in the Umatilla National Forest south of Ukiah.

The department said that irregular reports of wolves had come in during the past year in the northern part of the Desolation Game Management Unit in Grant and Umatilla counties in northeastern Oregon. And there were two reports of lone wolves confirmed by biologists earlier this year.

The combination of the earlier reports and the pair of tracks led the department to designate the site as an Area of Known Wolf Activity, which is given when wolves have become established as defined by repeated use of the area by the animals over a period of time.

Fish and Wildlife said it has little information about the new pair such as sex, breeding status and range. Surveys would be required to collect that information.
