This Reporter writes WDFW working to develop deterrents with Ranchers… in advance of grazing…??? That is one of the most inaccurate statements we have seen in a long time. WDFW needs to make it Mandatory that deterrent policy is in place as well as followed. If they can not adhere to a “mandated” deterrent policy, their grazing allotments need to be revoked for simply not following the policy. Martorello needs to begin to perform his job in a fashion that represents the public not the Ranchers.
Wolf pack activity has been documented by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officials in the former Profanity Peak pack area.
Seven members of the Profanity Peak pack were removed in 2016 by WDFW officials. WDFW officials are working with ranchers to develop non-lethal deterrence methods in advance of the grazing season. The Profanity Peak pack was located in Ferry County.
WDFW officials also investigated a dead calf and sheep in Stevens County. According to officials, the calf was most likely killed by a black bear and the sheep was killed by a cougar. The calf was found on May 17 and the sheep was found on May 21. Traps were set for both the bear and the cougar. Neither were successful.
Those livestock depredations come on the heels of a confirmed wolf kill in Ferry County on May 20.
