Oregon’s wolves will be the focus of a Thursday talk presented by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist John Stephenson at the January meeting of the Klamath Basin Audubon Society, according to a news release.

The society’s meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments, followed by announcements. The program presented by Stephenson will begin at 7:15 p.m. The meeting will be in the Coldwell Banker conference room at 3815 S. Sixth St. and it is open to the public.

Stephenson, who has been a wolf coordinator for Oregon since 2004, will focus his talk on the return of wolves to Oregon. This will include the recovery efforts in the northern Rocky Mountains that set the stage for wolves to reoccupy some parts of Oregon. About 20 years ago 41 wolves were released in Yellowstone National Park and their numbers have extended well beyond the park’s boundaries. Last year’s decision by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission to delist the wolf from the state’s Endangered Species List, and a recent livestock depredation north of Klamath Falls by OR-25, have brought wolves into sharper public focus.

Stephenson will discuss the Oregon Wolf Plan that was first developed in 2004 in anticipation of wolves returning to the state. A background on Oregon’s wolves was the focus of the 2015 PBS Oregon Field Guide special, “Living with Wolves.” The program can be viewed at bit.ly/1mFVuqv.
