PENDLETON — Ranchers can learn about the science and practical application of non-lethal wolf deterrents during an all-day workshop Friday, May 13 in Pendleton.

The workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Blue Mountain Community College, organized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services and Oregon State University Extension Service. Topics will include ongoing research into breeds of guard dog; the economics of predation; collaborative efforts to manage attacks on livestock; the role of non-lethal deterrents; and state compensation for damages caused by wolves. Presentations will be followed by a panel Q-and-A session.

Russ Morgan, wolf program coordinator with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, will be on hand, along with representatives from the USDA, state Department of Agriculture and Umatilla and Wallowa counties. Registration is limited to the first 100 people to sign up. The fee is $10, which includes a box lunch.

Those interested can pre-register by calling OSU Extension at 541-278-5403, or register at the door.
