Congressional Bid To Remove Wisconsin Wolves From Endangered Species List Falls Flat

An effort to remove the Great Lakes gray wolf from the federal endangered species list failed last week when Congress approved an omnibus spending bill.

Late last year language to remove protections for the animal in Wisconsin and the rest of the Western Great Lakes region was included in the House Interior and Environment appropriations bill. But in the flurry to get a spending plan passed before a Friday deadline, the rider was pulled from the final bill. GOP lawmakers left frustrated as they hoped for the delisting of gray wolves.

When wolves were federally delisted in 2012 in Wisconsin, 1521 wolves were killed from 2012-2014.  Many “sportsman” were trapping and hounding during this period, which we know are some of the most brutal and barbaric methods used to kill wolves. Nearly half of the population was wiped out.

Republican lawmakers in northern Wisconsin have long been frustrated by the federal rulings and have lobbied the state’s congressional delegation to pass legislation to delist wolves once and for all. State Sen. Tom Tiffany [R] said he was disappointed the rider was scrapped from the spending bill. He is also part of the group of Republican lawmakers from northern Wisconsin that are pushing a bill that would block game wardens and police from investigating illegal wolf killings in the state, AB 712 (aka wolf poaching Bill)

Tom Tiffiny went on to say that “The message is getting out more and more that sportsman are going to have to take this into their own hands and that’s the worst thing possible.”  We find that very interesting since he is one of the legislators backing the wolf poaching Bill. We are going to need to watch Wisconsin very closely with the possible increase in poaching.  Plus we all know who we are going to need to vote out!
